Good Food is Good Mood :)

Happy Foodie evening to everyone. I was really looking forward to write something exciting about food.  Being a food lover is normal but being from a Sindhi community is an added advantage. The excellent traditional Sindhi cuisines are mouth watering and irresistible. But this blog I've decided to dedicate it to my native place-Salem, Tamil-Nadu.

I was born and brought up in Salem before i permanently shifted to Bengaluru. I keep visiting Salem often to be with my grandparents. But often I have been asked questions and given suggestions like:
You going to Salem again? What's in Salem? Dont you get bored? Isn't it a small town? Go to Goa - You'll have more fun and what not.

One can never understand Salem until and unless they don't spend time there. This is one beautiful city with its own speciality. Leaving aside the fact that Salem is my native and I love being with my grandparents there, this place offers you "Peace" which you can never get anywhere. The variety of food it offers, the aroma of the filter coffee with special Nippat Set, the relaxing salon and spas, the place surrounded by temples and yet temples are over shadowed by one "Mangalam" Mess (Pure Non Veg) depicts the uniqueness of this place.

So I have decided to dedicate my first blog to some of the finest restaurants to visit in Salem and to enjoy your meal. There are unknown territories which I shall explore next time when I visit but these are one of the few best food joints in Salem.

1)  "SuperStar Pizza"-Themed in a dedication to our very own Thailavaa (Superstar) - The Rajnikanth. The hotel This hotel has Pizzas named after  Rajni sir's  movies and with his photos being displayed on the walls and his movie songs being played , it made the atmosphere even more soothing. Friendly and cheerful staff shall make your experience at this place a really memorable one.
Address : GK Towers, Behind Alagapuram Police station,  Alagapuram Pudur, Salem- 636016.

2) "Mangalavilas Military Hotel" or famously known as "Mangalam Mess" - This hotel starting with one restaurant near Shanti theatre, they now have five branches. The easiest one to locate for the tourists and the locals will be the one which is opened near the New Bus-stand. They have a sufficient seating capacity of about 50 people. They serve only Non-vegetarian food but hardcore non-vegetarians shall and should never leave an opportunity of visiting this place when in Salem. If you want to sweat without exercise but while eating and taste some Spicy mouthwatering non veg dishes then this the place to be at - THE MANGALAM Mess. One can enjoy the excellent chicken and mutton gravies with excellent side dishes like brain fry, chicken chukka, chicken roast, fish fry, egg fry, egg poriyal (Egg burji)  with parota, Dosas and  briyani. Dosas are served in the mornings till 12 PM and again in the evening. Briyani and meals are served in the noon. Its opened only upto 12 on Sundays.

3) "Sukh SagarFast Food Restaurant-  I will be a bit biased towards this place as this is my personal favourite and a recommendation to everyone , who visits Salem, to visit this place. I have never missed going to this place when I'm there. A pure vegetarian hotel with lots of varieties. If you are a vegetarian and prefer to have anything except South Indian then this your "Go To" place. From chats to pizzas , sizzlers and steaks to Chinese and from tandoor to any north Indian cuisine , you shall find each and every item in the menu. They serve really unique items like the Chinese Bhel, Roomali Papad, Chilly Cheese Kulcha, Hyderabadi Chat and Paneer Hot Fire.  While Jains are fans of Masala Papad, must visit this place and try the alternative Roomali Papad. This is roasted Roomali Roti served with Peanut Masala. This place is amazing. A bit expensively priced but to have delicious food ,sometimes you need to empty your pockets.

4) "Saravana Bhavan Asai Dosai" and "Saravana Bhavan Bakery":

Saravana Bhavan Asai Dosai: is a clean and well served restaurant on the Bengaluru highway at Salem city. Saravana Bhavan is an age old restaurant and quite famous in most parts of Tamilnadu. But this branch of theirs in the highway is excellent.
It remains quite crowded and may have to wait a few, for getting a seat. However, comparatively they serve fast with the help of huge team of pleasant wait staff. Proper parking assistance is available, not letting irresponsible drivers to double park.
Traditional food like Puttu, Paniyaram, Appam etc. made of minor millet are available, and quite delicious too. The filter coffee is a must have.

Address : Service Rd, Nedunchalai Nagar, Salem, Tamil Nadu -636005

Saravana Bhavan Bakery:
This is one of the best, if not the best Bakery in whole of India- THE SARAVANA BAKERY. With an amazing variety of cakes, Deserts, Snacks, Pizza, Burgers, Minibuns, Bread and Ice creams available here, makes it a must visit place for one's evening snacks. The best part of this bakery is they never ask the customer to tender exact change. Even if you pay them Rs.1000 for a Rs.50 item they never create any issue and return the change. They have an amazing staff and its usually crowded the entire week. The best time to visit the bakery would be between 11 am to 1 pm.

5) "FrizzStone & Deja vu Restocafe" - This recently opened restaurant is gaining lots of attraction. The name is catchy and the place has a very good ambience too. They have a lawn arrangement in the outdoors with a big screen too.  During pleasant evenings, its good to relax and have your food there. During the summers and especially in the noon, its always preferable to sit in the Air-conditioned room. They have limited items but very delicious ones.  Chinese is usually preferred cuisine. Veg Manchow Soup tastes the most delicious here.
FrizzStone is a part of the same restocafe. They are known for their ice-creams and ice cream rolls. These days its become a trend to mix anything and everything and smash the icecreams on ice stones and serve them. Its quite different and exquisite too.

6) Add ons - There are many more excellent restaurants which I would like to mention, which are worth visiting once  and other food items , which are exclusively available only in Salem, which must be tasted atleast once.

a) "Argees Restaurant"- Known for its excellent south Indian and north Indian cuisines. It is located in the heart of the city with air conditioned seating arrangements and also service is provided in the lawn. Lots of varieties to choose from the menu but the best dish here is the Idli Fry topped with Chutney Podi.

b) Kandavilas Military Hotel - This is again a pure Non vegetarian hotel, similar to the one to the Mangalam Mess.  Located in the town area of the city , they serve excellent non vegetarian dishes. The Parota with the Chicken Leg is the usually preferred dish.

c) Salem Thattu Vadai Set:
Salem Thattu Vadai Set is a spicy, tangy and tasty street food ; fresh and tangy beet, carrot and onion filling is sandwiched between crispy set of thattu vadai, smeared with spicy chutneys on the inside, for a crunchy and spicy bite. Usually available on road side stalls with some innovative items like Egg Set, Garlic Set, Podi set and so on. Available at Rs 10 makes it affordable for everyone and most delicious evening snack.

These are my favorite restaurants and foods of Salem. There are many more areas to explore there. I shall keep sharing my new experiences as and when its possible. Till then, everyone of you'll reading this blog, kindly do visit Salem in TamilNadu and enjoy the food, not so sure I can say about the climate though.  Always remember " People who love food are the best people" !!:)

Cya soon
